Meghalaya

Meghalaya literally the 'Abode of Clouds', Situated in the North Eastern corner of India with an area of 22,429 sq km and a population density of 78.5 per sq km, Meghalaya is a state of great scenic beauty: with undulating rivers, waterfalls, sparkling mountain streams, emerald-green lakes, gorges, precipitous ravines and panoramic views from hilltops. It is inhabited by mainly three tribes: the Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos. Weaving, Pottery, wood and stone carving, metal work and basketry are traditional village craft. As with most the North Eastern states, Meghalaya is diversely multi cultural, multi ethnic and multi religious, with an amazing mix of traditional and modern lifestyle.

SHILLONG

It is the capital city of the state of Meghalaya. Situated at an altitude of 1496m above the sea level, it is a well known hill station and a popular tourist destination across the country. This place was named the ‘Scotland of the East’ by the Britishers. Located 56kms from Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth, it creates a perfect atmosphere with wonderful lakes and waterfalls for the visitors. To reach Shillong, Guwahati is the nearest airport and railway station. By road, it is connected to every part of Meghalaya. The best season to visit this place is during the month of October-March. It is located in the core area of Ward Lake. The regional vegetation and flowers of Meghalaya are found in this garden. Dominated by orchids and some of the rare species of colorful birds, it has become a favorite place for visitors coming over here. Cathedral Church of Mary was built in 1913 by Germans it is the largest church in Meghalaya with excellent architectural works. These peaks are located 10kms and 20 kms away from the Shillong city respectively. Shillong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya with a height of 1961 m above the sea level. Magnificent landscapes with lush green forests make it an ideal tourist spot. The Sohpetbneng Peak is situated at a height of 1343 m above the sea level. The peak is regarded as a place of religious importance for the tribes of Khasi, Jaintia, Bhoi and War community. It is a perfect place for those who are in a search of solace. Nartiang is located in the Jaintia hills district. With a diameter of 100 m, Nartiang is a whole cluster of monoliths situated in the eastern part of Meghalaya, at a distance of 65kms from Shillong. The erection of Nartiang monoliths is regarded as one of the major events during the Jaintia era.

TURA

It is located as a town in the Garo hills surrounded with scenic natural beauty. Situated at about 2,500 ft above the Tura town, it is basically a peak in Meghalaya and headquarters of the West Garo hills. River Brahmaputra is flown through the Tura town towards Bangladesh. Guwahati is the main airport and railway station to reach this place. By road, it is also well connected to almost all the places in Meghalaya. The month of October to March is the best period to visit Tura Peak Tura is a cultural and administrative centre of the Garo tribes. To visit popular tourist destinations such as Balpakram, Nokrek and Siju cave, one needs to pass through this town.

There are many waterfalls and lot of streams in Tura. Some of the water falls are Rongbangdare, Pelgadare, and Gandrak Falls etc. Some of the streams are Rangolwari, Nokmawari, Ganol, Datchima etc. Nokrek National Park and Balpakram National Park are the two prominent national parks in Meghalaya. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is situated at a distance of 2 kms from the Tura Peak. The park is dominated with wide variety of flora and fauna. Mammals, reptiles and rare species of birds can be seen here. Balpakram National Park was set up in the year 1987 with an altitude of 3000 ft. Exotic species of flora and fauna are found here. Animals like elephants, tigers, hillock gibbons attract the wildlife lovers.

NONGSTOIN

Nongstoin is a small town but has been in fame because of the mining of a special stone that has embroidery colors naturally within it and which is found here only. Moreover, Nongstoin is the city to have the first saw mill of Meghalaya, after which it became the main habitat of log works in the state. The functioning of the saw mill was later on stopped by the honorable Supreme Court. The main tourist attraction in at Meghalaya is Nongkhnum Island. The most significant feature of this island is its size due to which it is counted as the second greatest island. The island is not too far away from Nongstoin Meghalaya., there is no particular time when the beauty of the hilly area tourist people will attract this place. Nongstoin during any time of the year.

NONGPOH

Nongpoh is a town and the administrative headquarters in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Situated at an elevation of 485 meters, this town form northern lower portion of the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya. Khasis inhabiting this region are mostly Christians and are called Bhosis. Most popular event among the people of this community is Nongkrem Dance, which is celebrated as a thanks giving to god. Almighty for good harvest, peace and prosperity of the community weaving cane mat, stools and baskets, is an integral part of the culture in this region.

Major attractions among the tourists visiting Nongpoh is the Road side market, which was famous for its venison, parrots and Myna pet stalls. Today, in this market features fruit and vegetable stalls. The Orchid Lake Resort is another popular attraction among the tourists destination.

CHERRAPUNJI

Cherrapunji is located at a distance of 60 kms from the capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong. Situated at an altitude of 4,500 ft above the sea level, it is popularly known as the wettest place in the world. It has been named in the Guinness book of world records for being a place, where a year-round rainfall is measured. Wonderful valleys and rivers increase the charm of Cherrapunji even more.. This place can be visited throughout the year. Cherrapunji is perhaps the only place in India, which has just one season: the monsoon. The rainfall varies from heavy to medium to light, but there is no month without rain. Another surprising fact about Cherrapunji is that it rains mostly at night. Day-to-day activity is not really disrupted by the rain. The raindrops beat incessantly on rooftops and treetops creating a compelling tattoo of awesome sounds, which cannot be savored anywhere else but in the Northeastern states. These are also the 'record-making' months, which contribute to records such as the stunning 22,987 mm of rainfall in 1861.

GOLF COURSE

Set up in 1889, it is the third oldest golf course in India and the largest golf course in Asia. This eighteen hole golf course lies at an altitude of 5200 ft. Being an ideal place for golf lovers, it is also popularly known as 'Golfer's Paradise'

WARD LAKE & UMIAM LAKE

Ward's Lake is an artificial lake located in the Shillong city. It is also known as ‘Nan Polok’ or ‘Polok Lake’. Colorful flowers and pine trees are the major attraction of this 100 years old lake. The local people therefore, prefer to call it "Nan Polok" or "Polok's Lake". This lake is quite popular for boatings as well as pleasant walks on the cobbled sand stone pathways, among beautiful, vividly colored flowers. The lake also sports on arched bridge over it. It is located in the heart of the city near Raj Bhawan and is easily approachable from Shillong.

The lake abounds in fish (grass carps) and feeding the fish from the bridge is a favorite pastime of the tourists. It is said that a Khasi prisoner, who requested for any kind of work to get him out of his cell, initiated its construction. The lake has a charming winding walk-a-way in the midst of rolling flowerbeds and fairyland lighting with gradually undulating grounds, hemmed in by lush greens. Boats are also presented, while the cafeteria provides refreshments.

Umiam Lake is situated 17 kms from the capital city Shillong. It is otherwise called ‘Barapani’. It is an ideal spot for water sport enthusiasts with facilities of sailing, boating, water skiin; Umiam Lake is also known as Barapani or Big Water and is a scenic place tucked away amidst the hills of Meghalaya, around The confluence of the two streams Umkhrah and Umshvrpi form the Wah Ro-ro stream in the north-west of the town and joins River Umiam, the main source of water for the lake. The principal catchment area of the lake and dam is spread over 220 square km, which includes Shillong and its adjoining areas, besides a portion of Ri Bhoi district. Existence of Umiam Lake goes beyond mere power generation. It provides a large number of ecosystem services at micro, meso and macro levels. Downstream irrigation, fisheries and drinking water (Rangmen Cantonment Area) cater to local anthropogenic needs.

HILLS

Khasi hills are considered to be one of the best hills resort in India. Situated at the central part of Meghalaya, it has picturesque natural treasures with a pleasant and pollution free climate which attract tourist the most. Khasi hills are located close to Shillong city. Dawki, Lum Nehru Park and Umiam Lake are the nearest attractions. Jaintia hills are located at the Eastern part of the state of Meghalaya. Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya is located at a distance of 64 kms from Jaintia hills. It has a river known as Myntdu River, which is famous for its natural beauty. These hills are surrounded by green forests, wonderful river valleys and waterfalls and serene and scenic atmosphere to allure tourists from all over India.

Some of the nearest places of attraction are Thadlaskein Lake and Syntu Ksiar Pool. Wildlife species with rich flora and fauna are the prime attractions of Garo hills. It is situated in Tura, at a distance of 323 km via Guwahati. To visit these places Guwahati is the closest airport and railhead. Meghalaya road transport services are easily available for road journey. The month of September to May is the perfect time to visit these hills in Meghalaya.

WATER FALLS

Sweet fall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya situated in the Happy Valley. Rengthiam fall is another cascading waterfall

CAVES

Caves of Khasi hills, Jaintia hills and Garo hills are the special attraction for tourists visiting Meghalaya. Mawsmai Cave, Krem Mawmluh and Krem Dam are the notable caves of Khasi hills. Jaintia hills caves include Krem Kotsati and The Cave of Eocene age, which are dark and frightening too. Bok Bak Dobhakol, Siju-Dobkhakol and Tetengkol-Balwakol caves are some of the longest and complex caves of Garo hills.
